Utopia // imagined perfect places

September 13, 2015 by bg-martin

Utopias are ‘invisible cities’, imagined perfect places, idealized states of possibility, envisioned in the minds of designers and writers like ltalo Calvino. The term was first used as the name of an imaginary island by Sir Thomas More in his book published in 1516. In More’s dream, Utopian islanders were governed by a perfect political and social system – a system later given a new and anatomical twist in George Orwell’s Animal Farm (1949).

The Depth of Space // Perception and Syntax in Representation

April 20, 2015 by bg-martin

The Depth of Space // Perception and Syntax in Representation by BG-Martin “There can be no design action without representation”.[1] Thoughts and ideas must be represented if they are meant to be shared with others. The notion of design representation is complex, serious, and more important than has been acknowledged in contemporary research and scholarly writings. With the event of modern architecture, the perception of image becomes part of a different system of thought: no longer, is an object related […]

April 17, 2015 by bg-martin

At the Verge of #Utopia // Defying Boundaries In 1961 Henri Lefebvre published a short essay defending the concept of what he called “experimental utopia,” which he defined as “imaginary variations on themes and exigencies defined by the real understood in the broadest sense: by the problems posed by reality and by the virtualities held within it.” It was the exploration of human possibilities, with the help of the image and the imagination, accompanied by a ceaseless criticism and a […]

Drive in Housing | Archigram

October 7, 2012 by bg-martin

Drive in Housing Archigram | 1972 The project is a preliminary study in the design of automated constructional, servicing and dismantling techniques applied to a large building development. The building has been designed large enough to include its own component production units. these manufacture moulded reinforced plastic panels, which are conveyed, folded up, to their position in the structure and then open out to form usable floor space. Plastics have been chosen in preference to steel as a constructional medium because the […]

Instant City | Peter Cook

September 28, 2012 by bg-martin

Instant City Peter Cook | 1970 Instant City is a mobile technological event that drifts into underdeveloped, drab towns via air (balloons) with provisional structures (performance spaces) in tow. The effect is a deliberate overstimulation to produce mass culture, with an embrace of advertising aesthetics. The whole endeavor is intended to eventually move on leaving behind advanced technology hook-ups.
